Thatcher Fucked The Kids - Frank Turner

Thatcher, Reagan, Roger Douglas in Aotearoa and all the others of your ilk; this song is as much for you as for Thatcher.

I do not mourn her.

  1. That was pretty great. Also true. I hear there are parties in her honor in GB, like celebrations of her death, haha.

  2. I think I am quite ignorant because I knew so little of what she did. I didn't know she broke the Unions, privatized the mines and dockyards, privatized so much housing, gave asylum to Pinochet, and helped build the arsenal of Saddam Hussein (later vilified). And more I am sure. She **broke** labour I am surprised she did not destroy the NHS. Oh what an evil evil woman. I saw a picture of a theater marquee in London that said "Thatcher is dead, LOL." And saddest of all, some of my oldest, dearest Facebook friends, people who are not well off, are saying she saved the country. From what? From what did she save it? Perhaps it is easier to go about with my head in the sand, but it is not very moral to turn a blind eye to evil.

    1. Thatcherism, Reaganism, in New Zealand it was Rogernomics (Roger Douglas as Finance Minister here in the 80's and the National party in the nineties continued NZ further along the path). These were all policies of the far-right. All about free market and deregulation. I've written about the NZ experience here and there before over on Multiply mostly I think. Our unions too, were broken and what had been government departments privatised - some that we still owned became SOE's such as the power company that our current government is now trying to sell. It goes on and on here, I bet it goes on and on in the UK too. In NZ, and I presume the UK too, but especially in NZ, we used to have the attitude that policies should be of benefit to the common good, like free health care, free education, publicly owned postal services and communications asset etc. Rogernomics/Thatcherism changed all that and the prevailing attitude becomes all about the individual. very grasping, greedy. Underfund the police force for example and it becomes more dangerous for the average people but the rich can afford private security and high fences, gates, and technology. "User pays" in other words. If you can't afford it, bad luck, really you are a waste of space.

Back in the day they sold our National airline, then the private owners ran it down because they are only about profits for shareholder, the Helen Clark Labour government wound up buying it back during our term in office. Now our current idiots want to sell it again.

Far-right politics insists we are a dog-eat world and everyone just wants to grab what they can. One cannot have good enduring policies from this kind of attitude of exploitation.

There are people who still believe all that the media say without critique. The Pope is good, all Muslims are terrorists and bad, thatcher saved us. From what? Good question, I don't think there is an answer.

    1. Well if they do I haven't heard them much either. These days though, I think a protest song is highly unlikely to be recorded by mainstream corporates, perhaps they are still around but more localised. This one was very well done.

  4. Oh what fun it is to see the country polarised again by the wicked witch of the West, the late Margaret Hilda Thatcher who is now and for eternity cackling in Hell with delight over the controversy she has caused. The BBC has been compromised in its fawning one dimensionality yet again (bearing in mind that Auntie is still shuddering from the shock of finding out that Broadcasting House was a paedophile knocking shop for at least 50 years)....the current agonising dilemma facing the propaganda channel is whether to play or not play Ding Dong the Wich is Dead on its top 40 radio show. There is much wringing of hands and beating of breasts with half the country demanding that the song is silenced in the run up to planting Thatcher, while the other half demands that it is played. They have had to abandon the 2 minute silence at football matches because it became abundantly clear that they would have been either ignored or worse still so far as the establishment is concerned.....would trigger loud singing of anti-Thatcher songs which would be televised and beamed worldwide......I hope Tony Blair is watching this because in death as in life Margaret Thatcher was his John the Baptist figure, his creator and his liberator....and the reaction to her death, the hatred that is has unleashed across the generations including ones not born when she was finally driven out of office is a dress rehearsal for the anti-funeral of Tony Blair. He is destined to replace Guy Fawkes as the object of national loathing for generations yet to come.
The outpourings of bile Thatcher's demise has unleashed is a mere millpool compared with the oceanic scale of what we as a nation will do to Tony Blair easily the most detested figure in British history bar none, upon his final journey into infamy .

One last question on the Thatcher funeral.....why hasn't it been privatised, how come non-existent 'society' (i.e. taxpayers like me) has to pay the £10 million bill to bury the old bugger?

Margaret will go to her grave the recipient of public funds, a benefit scrounger who can't even get buried without a hand-out from the government.

    1. Haha, I didn't know that about the football matches - Well done, you lot! Over our media we keep hearing that quote about how the silly woman thinks she became prime minister on her own bat (as if anyone in this world is an island) and owed nothing to feminism! Which deeply offends me because she wouldn't even have had the vote if it wasn't for the suffragettes!

It's amazing, in these times when the poor are supposed to be tightening their belts (presuming you can afford to buy a belt, I'm eyeing up a piece of string), that the rich must continue to spend public money as gluttonously as they do. All those millions being spent on Thatcher's trip to hell, just think how many kids could have had breakfast on that. How many African's could have got better drinking water. And the next thing they'll be screaming out for yet another bailout and it will be a free-for-all into workers bank accounts like in Cyprus, now that they've all got that idea...

Ding dong the witch is dead! Hoorah!! Hoorah!!

  5. lol................I didn't think any one wrote songs like this anymore, I think he's covered just about every thing here. .
She has many legacies, none of them particularly pleasant, and many of them mentioned here, but one that escapes most people is the way she managed to change the mindset of generations of people. My children and their children were not even born when she was first elected to power, but many of their generation have inherited the selfish, uncaring, self centered, money grabbing, consumer led, dog eat dog, society she created. She was successful I'll give her that, her vile mentality and complete lack of integrity has flourished and stood the test of time, what she started the likes of Cameron etc are happily completing.

    1. I agree and you are quite right too, about the changing of the mindset to something less socialistic to the self-centeredness and individualistic creed. It happened here too with the same Thatcher ideologies put into action via Rogernomics (Roger Douglas, finance minister of a Labour government if you please) in the mid to late eighties and then followed with even more venom throughout the nineties by the National Government (the Kiwi Tory equivalent, I suppose). The Helen Clark Labour-led government which came to power on the cusp of 2000 and remained in power for 9 years did actually apologise and backed off from some of those very hard policies while never quite returning us to the kinder world we used to inhabit pre-rogernomics. Now we have the Key-led National/Act coalition government in (ACT being the party that Roger Douglas began after his stint in Labour, which should give some idea of what that party is about) and they are quite blatantly trashing Kiwis just as bad as what happened before but instead of an iron maiden at the helm (who is easy to hate) our government has the ever-smiling (while lying through his teeth) John Key and stupid people vote for someone they think is nice without reading policy.

Oh dear, sorry about my rant. I am so on your page, I agree with you completely.
